"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." (John 9:4)
City Church is doing Kingdom work with urgency, focus and sincerity. We are a small, inner city, startup ministry all about
empowering people through the word of God and infusing the heart of God into the heart of the city. We are mission-based and
people-focused with a specific call to urban evangelism. It is our goal to both preach the Gospel and model it by being the hands
and feet of Jesus in our local community and abroad.
Before being reorganized and renamed "City Church," the ministry was named Evangelistic Temple Church of God In Christ
(COGIC). It was founded in October 1952, was first housed at 590 William Street in Buffalo, New York under the leadership of
Reverend Melvin A. Bailey.
Years later, Bishop Joseph Brinson, Sr. was appointed pastor of Evangelistic Temple by Bishop Glenwood H. Young, Sr.,
Presiding Prelate of New York Western Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. In August 2016, Bishop Brinson moved the church to
84 Rickert in the heart of Buffalo’s inner city.
Then on April 9, 2017 Elder Kenya Hobbs was officially appointed Executive Pastor of Evangelistic Temple. He and his wife
Dianna Hobbs served under Bishop Brinson. In May 2018, Bishop Brinson relinquished his role as senior pastor and turned the
reins of the church over to Pastor Hobbs.
With much prayer and through the Holy Spirit's leading, Pastor and Lady Hobbs relaunched the ministry with fresh vision and
mission. Thus, City Church was birthed. Its name is based on Matthew 5:14: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill
cannot be hidden.”
